Edmonton Technical Dinner - February 18, 2010 (Thursday)
NASTT Colleagues and Friends,
Please join us for the fourth technical presentation event of the 2009-10 season on Thursday February 18. This dinner event is a joint presentation with the CSCE and TAC.
This month’s speaker will be Brad Smid from the City of Edmonton. Mr. Smid is a graduate in Civil Engineering from the University of Alberta. Brad began his engineering career in the private sector and was involved in heavy civil construction and railroad engineering, prior to joining the Transportation Department of the City of Edmonton in 2002. Brad is a Project Manager in the LRT Design and Construction Branch of the City’s Capital Construction Department, where he has been involved in the planning, design, and construction of Edmonton’s South LRT and North LRT extensions since 2005. In addition to his work responsibilities, Brad is the Western Region Vice President of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering (CSCE) and serves on the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologist, and Geophysicists of Alberta (APEGGA) Edmonton Branch Committee.
Brad will be speaking us about the design and construction of the North LRT project. The North LRT extension from downtown to the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) is part of Edmonton’s plan to develop a comprehensive transit system where more people use transit as a preferred mode. This 3.1 km LRT extension will branch off the existing LRT line at Churchill Station, travel through a 700 meter underground tunnel, and then run on surface from MacEwan University to NAIT. This LRT extension will link major post-secondary and health care centres to the LRT system, and form the first section of a future extension to northwest Edmonton and St. Albert.
This presentation will discuss the unique aspects of extending Edmonton’s LRT through a dense urban environment, and how “lessons learned” from the South LRT extension are being applied in the project management and detailed design of the North LRT.
