Edmonton Technical Lunch - March 25, 2010 (Thursday)
NASTT Colleagues and Friends,
Please join us for the fifth technical lunch of the 2009-10 season on Thursday March 25.
This month’s speaker will be Mark Brand, P.Eng. of Insituform Technologies Limited (ITL). Mark is the Regional Manager for Western Canadian Operations. He began his career with ITL as a Technical Sales Engineer in January of 1995. He then changed gears and took on a more Operational Role as Project Executive which later progressed into his position today. Mark has given numerous design workshops for clients and consultants alike and has been published in numerous trade publications and conference proceedings. Mark now oversees the largest CIPP operation in Canada today.
Mr. Brand will be speaking to us about a recent CIPP project in Metro Vancouver which involved lining 325 m of 1,725 mm diameter pipe.
Sewage pipe remediation is not an unusual municipal project, but Metro Vancouver (formerly the Greater Vancouver Regional District) was faced with a significant problem with one of its main sewage trunks. Buried deep underground, the Highbury Interceptor combined sewer system conveys Vancouver’s sewage and storm water to a point on the north bank of the Fraser River’s north arm. From there, it is forced beneath the river through the Highbury Siphon to the Iona Island Wastewater Treatment Plant.
Metro Vancouver considered a number of solutions, but in the end, cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) lining was chosen as the optimum technical and logistical solution. This presentation will touch on the history of the original Interceptor’s construction, subsequent maintenance problems with the siphon in the 1990’s, and then discuss some of the more difficult logistical challenges of installing a 1725 mm diameter CIPP liner underneath the Fraser River.
