Edmonton Technical Lunch - April 22, 2010 (Thursday)

| Comments Off

NASTT Colleagues and Friends,

Please join us for the sixth and final technical lunch of the 2009-10 season on Thursday April 22.

Fort McMurray is located just south of the major oil sands development that has been ongoing in recent years, and as a result, has been experiencing phenomenal growth.  To service this growth, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) has been investing in major infrastructure upgrades, one of which involves a twin forcemain crossing of the Athabasca River.  The crossing will include two 900 mm HDPE pipes installed by HDD methods, with each drill being over 1,200 m in length.

This presentation provides an overview of the complexities of the project, which included significant environmental, geotechnical, land acquisition and public stakeholder considerations.  There were also several other contractors working in the area, including a major bridge construction project, that presented a number of logistic complications that had to be addressed by the design and the contractor’s work plan.  The project team’s approach to overcome these issues, that included a risk sharing plan between the owner and the contractor that identified responsibilities prior to construction start up, will also be discussed.

This month’s speaker will be Todd Simenson, P.Eng., who is a Practice Leader and Senior Project Manager for Stantec’s Environmental Infrastructure group in Red Deer. Todd has a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Saskatchewan and, over his 24 year career, has been involved in various civil engineering projects including transmission and distribution systems, lift stations, forcemains, lagoons, reservoirs, pump stations, stormwater management, subdivision development, highways and roadways, and sewage disposal systems.
