NASTT Colleagues and Friends,

Please join us for the sixth technical lunch of the 2012-2013 season on April 18th, 2013.

This month’s presenter is Junhao Zou.  Junhao is Senior Engineer and Project Manager with City of Edmonton, Drainage Services, Design and Construction. Junhao completed his bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering at Tsinghua University in China and his MSc degree in Construction Engineering and Management at the University of Alberta.

This month’s presentation will be discussing the functions and operations of the WESS Stage W12 project, various challenges the City of Edmonton encountered during this project including the ground conditions, secondary liner installation, flow diversion, etc. and lessons the City learned.

As a part of West Edmonton Sanitary Sewer (WESS), the Rat Creek to McNally inverted syphon project (Stage W12) is being implemented by the City of Edmonton (COE) to direct wet weather flows to the Gold Bar Wastewater Treatment Plant (GBWWTP) and to reduce a significant amount of combined sewer overflows (CSO) to the North Saskatchewan River (NSR).

The WESS Stage W12 project includes a 1100m long, 2.4 m ID syphon tunnel buried at a depth ranging from 20m to 70m with a design flow rate of 15 cms, a real time control facility (RTC#3) and monitoring facilities both upstream and downstream. City of Edmonton’s Drainage Services Design and Construction completed most of the detailed design and construction activities using in-house forces.
