Edmonton Technical Lunch - March 29, 2012 (Thursday)

|

NASTT Colleagues and Friends,

Please join us for the fifth technical lunch of the 2011-2012 season on Thursday, March 29, 2012.
This month’s presenter is Heinrich Heinz.  Heinrich is a Geotechnical Engineer and Principal with Thurber Engineering in Calgary, with over 25 years of experience as a geotechnical practitioner. He has been involved in a variety of major tunnelling and trenchless projects in Canada and abroad, and has acted as an expert witness in geotechnical matters

The month’s presentation will provide a brief overview of the risks associated with tunnel construction and will outline the main features of a GBR, with examples from two recent Calgary tunnel projects.  Linear projects involving subsurface excavation such as tunnels present many risks, as geological and geotechnical conditions can vary significantly along the alignment.  Geotechnical Baseline Reports (GBRs) have been proposed to clearly define and allocate these risks between the contracting parties. The main purpose of a GBR is to present, in a concise manner, the subsurface conditions anticipated along the proposed tunnel alignment, and to set baselines for the geotechnical aspects of the design and construction of the tunnel.  The GBR is normally accompanied by a Geotechnical Data Report (GDR), a separate document which contains all the factual information gathered during the investigations.
