Edmonton Technical Lunch - Thursday March 28, 2019

NASTT Colleagues and Friends

Please join us for the fifth technical lunch of the 2018-2019 season on Thursday, March 28th, 2019.

This month’s presentation is Mysterious hole on south Edmonton street.

In July 2018, EPCOR Drainage discovered a substantial underground void while preparing for rehabilitation of a manhole at Allendale Road and Calgary Trail. Major traffic closures were implemented while the cause and extent of the void were investigated. This resulted in public and media interest, with such article headlines as “’Substantial void’ found under Calgary Trail and Allendale Road” and “Mysterious hole on south Edmonton street…”.

This presentation will discuss the background, discovery, investigation, and rehabilitation of the void and related infrastructure, revealing some of the “mystery” behind the void. Key learnings and outcomes of this project will be discussed.

This month’s presenter is Danica Johnston. Ms. Johnston is the project manager on the Allendale emergency repair. Danica joined EPCOR Drainage in 2017, after 5 years of consulting in the waste industry. She is a civil-environmental engineer and a University of Alberta alumnus.
